Have you had negative experiences with our healthcare system? Dr. John Kellum details the ways in which hospital systems are now working to reduce costs by reducing care--often at the expense of patient interests. Fortunately, there are ways in which patients - all of us - can reduce our risk and improve our care. By examining our healthcare history, proposed solutions, and comparisons to other systems, Dr. Kellum assesses the uncharted direction in which American health care is heading, and offers practical advice for patients navigating it.

Dr. Kellum is a Distinguished Professor and holds the UPMC Endowed Chair in Critical Care Research in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also is Director of the Center for Critical Care Nephrology at Pitt and serves as an Intensivist at UPMC.
