Program Description

Body

Poet, musician, and prose writer Gemma Stemley will be joining us for selections of music and readings that celebrate women. Beginning with her great-grandmother, who lost her family in a volcanic eruption that took place in Martinique in 1902, Gemma charts many of the roles women have played in their communities and societies, as well as the harsh expectations placed on them.

This presentation invites a response from audiences, to share aspects of womanhood which connect women the world over in ways that are universal. Listeners can share stories of motherhood or care giving, the struggle for gender equality and reproductive rights, as well as intergenerational bonds of mentoring.
