What parts of the Harlem Renaissance are still prominent, and what parts have been obscured by time? “Sankofa”, a term from the Akan people of Ghana, refers to going back for things that have been left behind. Dr. Anthony Mitchell will be presenting the history of this cultural and artistic movement, from the well-known to the overlooked. Among other subjects, he'll discuss:

  • The Great Migration
  • Marcus Garvey
  • Alain Locke
  • Great writers and poets
  • Visual Artists 
  • Music and Entertainment

Dr. Mitchell is a Professor Emeritus at Penn State University, where he taught in the Department of African American Studies. Dr. Mitchell's historical studies include a Fulbright-Hays Study in Ghana, West Africa, and Civil Rights Movement studies in Atlanta, Montgomery, Birmingham, Selma, Alabama, and Little Rock, Arkansas.
